Yesterday Marvel dropped the first official teaser for the next summer film, Thor: Love and Thunder.
I want to give my initial thoughts and predictions for the film.
Thoughts:
My initial thoughts after watching the trailer are that I really enjoyed and am very excited for this film. The following things stuck out to me the most from my first viewing:
Thor's Journey of Self-Discovery
Thor's journey in this film seems to be one of self-discovery. It looks like Thor intends to give up his superhero ways and wants to find himself. I really like that idea for Thor because after watching him fight for others for so long, now it will be nice to see Thor doing what he wants and figuring out his new purpose.
At the end of Thor: The Dark World, Thor rejected the throne of Asgard and wished to find his own path. In Ragnarok, while trying to do so, his family drama drew him back to Asgard and he had to fight for Asgard once again. After Ragnarok, he got dragged into the confrontation with Thanos. So, after getting sidetracked from his journey by all these threats, now that those threats are gone, what is next for Thor? The shots of Thor in different locations remind me of the Odyssey and other Greek tales of a hero on a journey that brings him to different worlds.
This journey of self-discovery could bring further growth and development for Thor and can bring back some of the epic storytelling elements of the first two Thor films while also working with the more fun and comedic universe that Rangarok director, Taika Waititi created.
The Return of the Guardians of the Galaxy
The inclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy fit very well with Thor's universe as I had stated after watching Guardians Vol. 2 and Ragnarok back-to-back. The Guardians and Thor great chemistry in Infinity War and the ending to Endgame showed Thor leaving with the Guardians so it was expected for them to be in this film. It appears Thor and the Guardians will most likely go their separate ways either early in the film or halfway through as this journey seems to be more about Thor being on his own and finding himself. I do think that the Guardians will most likely show up to aid Thor in the film’s climax. I also believe that the post credit scene for this film will be a teaser tie-in to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The Return of Jane Foster
After being absent from Thor Ragnarok with very little explanation, the final scene of the trailer shows that Natalie Portman will be returning as Jane Foster. This time however, she will not be a simple damsel in distress but a badass Goddess who can somehow wield Thor's hammer. It will be interesting to see Portman back in the mix as a female Thor.
Use of Rock Music
The use of Guns N' Roses song "Sweet Child O' Mine," gives it a similar vibe to Thor: Ragnarok which makes sense as Rangarok director, Taika Waititi is returning for Love and Thunder. The song fit perfectly for the trailer as it felt like a song you would hear before going on a big trip or in Thor's case, an epic journey.
Homage to He-Man
The logo for the film is very colorful and vibrant. As opposed to the first two Thor films that had a basic logo, this one is more fun and feels like the title from a comic book. It also reminds me of the logo for Masters of the Universe and upon comparison there are a lot of similarities in both style and color.
Even the official poster pays homage with Thor and He-Man sharing the same pose. Whoever did the designs must have been a big fan of Masters of the Universe.
The Inculsion of Gods
One of the many worlds shown in the trailer was a world that resembled a utopian God world like Olympus. It showed a God hold a thunder bolt and it has since been confirmed that this is Zeus who will be played by Russell Crowe. It is interesting to have Thor meet Zeus as it will be God of Thunder meeting God of Thunder. Russell Crowe as the Greek God of Thunder is a great choice and if Thor had been made in the 90s, Crowe would have been a great choice to play him, so it is ironic to see him join the Thor universe in this capacity.
Teasing of Gorr the God Butcher
It was announced earlier that Christian Bale would be playing the role of the main villain, Gorr the God Butcher. While he did not appear in the trailer, there was this one scene shown that was taken right from the comic depicting Thor looking upon God that had already been killed by Gorr. This is a small teaser for the threat that is Gorr and I am sure that a later trailer will fully reveal him and give us a better look.
Final Thoughts
The trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder is a great first trailer that tells us just enough but still doesn't give away everything. It has potential to be the best Thor film yet and only time will tell if it can top Ragnarok. It has me even more excited to see this film when it releases this summer and is looking to be another great Marvel summer blockbuster.
